Beard Trims & Line-Ups in Downtown LA

A good beard trim fixes the three things that are hard to do at home: the neckline, the cheek line and even length. About 25 minutes on its own, or booked with your haircut so the fade and beard read as one shape.

Had such a great first experience at Mahbod Style! Mahbod was super friendly, listened to exactly what I wanted, and did an amazing job. My haircut and beard came out exactly how I wanted them. You can really tell he cares about the little details, and I really appreciated that. The shop is also clean, organized, and has a great vibe.

Expert tips

Grow a better beard between visits

Where the lines go

  • Neckline: about one to two finger-widths above the Adam’s apple
  • Cheek line: follow your natural line, just cleaner — don’t drop it too low
  • Mustache: trim to the top of the lip, not into it
  • Sideburns: match the haircut so the two blend

At home

  • Trim length only; leave the lines to your barber
  • Wash with a gentle cleanser, not bar soap
  • Use beard oil daily, balm for shape
  • Brush downward to train the growth
The guide

Beard grooming in Downtown LA: getting the shape right

Most beards don't need to be shorter — they need better lines. A barber's beard trim is about proportion: where the neckline sits, how low the cheek line goes and how the beard connects to your haircut. Get those right and even a short or patchy beard looks intentional.

Match the beard to your face

  • Round face: keep the sides tighter and leave a little length at the chin to lengthen the face.
  • Long face: keep length off the chin and a bit more fullness at the sides.
  • Square jaw: a short boxed beard follows the jaw and keeps it sharp.
  • Soft jawline: a slightly fuller beard with a clean neckline creates definition.

The neckline makes or breaks it

The most common at-home mistake is shaving the neckline up onto the jaw. It makes the beard look smaller and the chin weaker. A natural neckline sits about one to two finger-widths above the Adam's apple and curves back toward the ears. Leave that line to your barber and only trim length at home.

Beard and haircut together

If you wear a skin fade, the sideburns should fade into the beard rather than stop abruptly. That's why most clients book the combo: $65 with a regular or scissor cut, $70 with a skin fade, about 1 hour 10–15 minutes.

Patchy or uneven growth

Keep it shorter and even, set the cheek line slightly lower so gaps blend, and give it four to six weeks between shaping appointments so it can fill in. Beard oil won't grow hair, but it makes what's there look healthier and softer.

Finish the look

A quick nose, ear and cheek wax ($15, five minutes) cleans up the edges a trimmer can't reach. Want everything in one appointment? The VIP service combines haircut, beard, full-face wax, a gold-mask facial and hot & cold steam.

FAQ

Beard trim questions

How much is a beard trim?

A beard trim and line-up is $30 and takes about 25 minutes. With a haircut it is $65, or $70 with a skin fade.

Can I book just a line-up?

Yes — book the beard trim & line-up and tell your barber you only want the edges cleaned up.

Do you use a hot towel?

Yes, beard services finish with a warm towel and beard product.

How often should I trim my beard?

Every 2–3 weeks for short beards, 3–4 weeks for longer ones. Lines grow out first, so many clients book a quick line-up between full trims.

Can you shape a patchy beard?

Yes. The right lines and length make a beard look fuller. We’ll tell you honestly which shape works with your growth.
