Find a salon that actually does perms

Plenty of salons list perms but rarely do them. Ask how often they perm, what rod sizes they use and whether they'll look at your hair first. At Mahbod Style every perm starts with a consultation: we check your color history, texture and the result you want before choosing the rods and the formula.

Types of perms

• Body wave / beach wave — big rods, soft bend, the most natural result.
• Classic curl — smaller rods for springier, defined curls.
• Men's textured perm — curl on top only, sides short or faded. Instantly fixes flat, straight hair.
• Root perm — lift at the root only, for fine hair that falls flat.

How much a perm costs

Price depends on length because longer hair takes more time and product. At our Downtown LA studio a perm is $150 for short hair (about 2 hr 30 min), $250 for medium (about 3 hours) and $350 for long hair (about 4 hours). Very thick hair can take longer; we confirm before starting.

Can you perm colored or bleached hair?

Often yes, with care. Single-process or lightly highlighted hair usually perms well. Heavily bleached or damaged hair may not hold a curl safely — in that case we'll suggest a conditioning treatment first, or a different way to get texture. Tell us everything about your color history; it changes the formula.

Living with a perm

Skip washing for 48 hours, then switch to sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Scrunch in curl cream or mousse, air-dry or diffuse on low, and avoid brushing curls when they're dry. A trim every 8–12 weeks keeps the shape. Most perms relax gradually over several months as your hair grows.
