The guide

Getting highlights that look expensive

Highlights look expensive when the placement follows your haircut, the tone suits your skin and the regrowth is planned. Here's what we focus on.

Placement

Thin, closely spaced foils give a blended result; thicker sections give contrast. Brightness around the face does the most work, so we concentrate there and keep the underneath slightly deeper for dimension.

Tone

Warm skin suits honey and golden tones; cool skin suits beige and ash. If you're not sure, look at the veins on your wrist in daylight — greenish usually means warm, bluish means cool — or just ask at the consultation.

Highlights vs. balayage

Foil highlights are brighter and more even from the root. Balayage is softer and grows out with less of a line. Many clients combine them: a few foils near the face, painted pieces through the lengths.

Keeping blonde bright

  • Purple shampoo once a week, no more — it can dull the hair.
  • Heat protection every time you style.
  • A gloss between appointments brings back shine.
  • Book again in 6–10 weeks for an even look.
FAQ

Highlights questions

How much are highlights?

Highlights are $200 and take about 2 hours 30 minutes. Very long or thick hair can need more time; your stylist confirms before starting.

Highlights or balayage?

Highlights are brighter and more uniform from the root. Balayage is softer and grows out more gently. Not sure? Book highlights and we’ll talk it through at the consultation.

Will highlights damage my hair?

Any lightening affects the hair, but careful placement, the right developer and a toner keep it healthy. We’ll tell you if your hair needs a break first.

How often should I get highlights?

Every 6–10 weeks for a bright, even look; longer if you prefer a lived-in grow-out.
